Across the Carpathians:
Music from Central & Eastern Europe

Friday & Saturday, January 30-31, 2004

Explore the musical comminglings of peasants and aristocrats, who danced to the same music in the days before classical and folk music parted ways.  Seattle Trans-Carpathian band Ensemble Sub Masa, whose influences include classical, klezmer, Hungarian, Romanian, and Transylvanian music, joins Baroque Northwest in the first of our Closing the Gap series. The bands will play music from both oral and written traditions, including transcribed gypsy dances found in Haydn's collection and pieces from a 17th-century Transylvanian codex discovered in a monastery wall (the Codex Caioni). The program will also include music by Polish baroque composers from the 17th century, Adam Jarzebski and Marcin Mielczewski, as well Hungarian composer Balint Bakfark (1507-1576 ).

Ensemble Sub Masa will perform on violin, cimbalom, accordion, and contrabass, and Baroque Northwest will play on baroque flute and recorder, violin, viola da gamba, lute, theorbo, archlute, and baroque guitar.

Pre-concert event: Folk and classical music side by side in the 17th and 18th centuries.
