Tekla Cunningham's Bio

Violinist and violist Tekla Cunningham performs across the United States and in Europe with such renowned early music groups as the American Bach Soloists, the Baroque Chamber Orchestra of Colorado, Musica Angelica in Los Angeles, the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, the San Francisco Bach Choir, and the Seattle Baroque Orchestra. She also plays at the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival and the Carmel Bach Festival, and has appeared as a guest artist with many noted chamber music groups, including the Artaria Quartet, the Del Sol Quartet, Musica Pacifica, and the Aulos Ensemble. Her period-instrument ensemble, the Novello Quartet, delights audiences in the Bay Area and beyond with performances of music by Joseph Haydn and his contemporaries. Tekla is a member of La Monica, an ensemble dedicated to music of the 17th century whose most recent concerts at the Bloomington Early Music Festival were described as sizzling. A native of Seattle, she studied history, German literature, and music at Johns Hopkins University and the Peabody Conservatory and continued her musical studies at the Hochschule fr Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Vienna. She holds a masters degree from the Conservatory of Music in San Francisco, where she studied with Ian Swenson.
