The Magnificent Seven

"The Magnificent Seven: The Liberal Arts in Sight and Sound"

The Magnificent Seven: the Liberal Arts in Sight and Sound, includes music from the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque eras that incorporate the seven liberal arts (grammar, rhetoric, logic, music, mathematics, geometry, and astronomy). The works, vocal motets by the Ars Nova composer Philippe de Vitry, viol fantasias by Renaissance composers William Byrd, Heinrich Isaac and others, and chamber music for cello, flute, and harpsichord by J.S. Bach, reflect the liberal arts in their structure and intent. In addition, the liberal arts will be represented visually by audience-produced artwork displayed in the lobby before the concert and during intermission (Benevolent Order for Music of the Baroque) audiences always get in on the act!).

For this concert, the ensemble featured internationally acclaimed early string specialist Margriet Tindemans on viola da gamba. Director Kim Pineda (flute and voice) is also joined by singers Maria Coldwell, and David Stutz; Elisabeth Reed, viola da gamba and cello, Elizabeth Liddle, viola da gamba, and Jillon Stoppels Dupree, harpsichord.

The first time this program was performed, it was a concert wherein the liberal arts are portrayed in the music of Philippe de Vitry and Johann Sebastian Bach. This concert was given in conjunction with a tour of an art museum's collection of works relevant to the music.
