Revolutionary Baroque: Music of Thomas Jefferson's Library

A passion for music took root in American soil long before the American Revolution, and was shared by frontier dwellers, aristocrats, and politicians alike. Thomas Jefferson, a violinist of some accomplishment, kept an up-to-date music library with all the latest music from Europe. He and other signers of the Declaration of Independence regularly enjoyed musical entertainments ranging from baroque music concerts to country dances. This program will include works by Corelli, Tessarini, CPE Bach, Carl Friedrich Abel, Peter Pelham (of Williamsburg, well known to Jefferson), and a selection of Virginia hill tunes. Special guests Shira Kammen (Baroque and modern violins, voice), and Charles Coldwell (recorder, violin) join the Baroque Northwest Quartet that will stir your interest in American history.
