Travels with Quantz
Johann Joachim Quantz's journeys to Italy, France and England put him in
personal contact with the most influential musicians of his time. As a
result, he was a first-rate authority on the most diverse musical styles
in Europe. Quantz advocated selecting the best from the musical tastes of
different peoples. The Baroque Northwest Quartet of
Kim Pineda, transverse flute,
Ronnee Fullerton, viola da gamba,
Elizabeth Brown, archlute and baroque guitar, and
August Denhard, theorbo and baroque guitar, starts
the season with this program featuring the premiere of our latest
commissioned piece by composer Tim Risher (USA/Germany).
Music by Blavet and Couperin (Paris), Godfrey Finger (London),
Zamboni (Italy), and, of course, Quantz himself.
Like Quantz, composer Tim Risher lives in Germany. He has composed pieces
for a wide variety of chamber groups, including those for early
instruments, such as the Palladium Ensemble. To prepare for this
composition, he read Quantz's tome on musical performance. His piece for
us, "Arounds," takes its title from the shapes and ideas carried in the
music. In the first movement the musical themes swirl around each other,
and in the second movement, the flute and viola da gamba follow each other
in the form of a canon, accompanied by the guitar and theorbo.
