The Rhetoric of Gods & Monsters
This program features Baroque music based on classical rhetorical principles where each piece is related to each other and the whole concert presents a single musical event. Highlights of this concert are François Couperin's Apotheosis of Corelli, which tells the story of the composer Arcangelo Corelli and how he is helped by various gods from Greek mythology to find enlightenment in music by combining the French and Italian styles, and Giuseppe Tartini's intense violin sonata, "The Devil's Trill." Tartini allegedly had a dream in which the devil came to him and played an amazing piece, which Tartini wrote down as soon as he woke from the dream.

Featured in this program are Kim Pineda, transverse flute, David Wilson, violin, David Morris, viola da gamba, Corey Jamason, harpsichord, and Jennifer Crawford, narrator.

The rhetorical elements involved in the program are those dealing with presenting a discussion or argument:

Introduction (exordium)--Sonata in D, op. 5, no. 1--- Arcangelo Corelli
Narration (narratio)--Lamento in C--- Johann Jakob Froberger
Proposition(propositio)--Trio Sonata in D--- Jean-Marie Leclair
Confirmation (confirmatio)--Sonata in d, Op 2, No 2, "La Vibray"--- Michel Blavet
Contradiction (contradictio)--The Devil's Trill sonata--- Giuseppe Tartini
