Closing the Gap: Music from the Louisiana Territory
When the French founded a city on the delta in 1718,
music and dance became the heartbeat of pleasure-loving
New Orleans. The program will feature music from the
Ursuline Manuscript, which dates from the 1730s and
contains the earliest music known to survive in New
Orleans and the entire lower Mississippi River valley.
We'll be choosing from thirty or more French and
Italian composers of the late 17th and 18th centuries.
Add to this the traditional music of the transplanted
Acadians (Cajuns) from Canada, and you'll experience
the very deep roots of early music in America. The
Baroque Northwest Quartet is joined
by the Seattle-based Cajun band
Capuchon.
