Kathryn Smith Derksen bio

Kathryn Smith Derksen is a local composer and performer of early music, having performed with Le Nuove Musiche, the Puget Sound Consort, the Early Music Guild, and was a guest on Classic King FM. She has also enjoyed international performances in the United Kingdom and Uganda, and has been a featured soloist with such groups as Altus Vocare in Palo Alto, Fresno Pacific University's Musica Pacifica, the Fresno Early Music Society, and Queens University Faculty Players (Belfast, U.K.). She graduated cum laude from Fresno Pacific University with a BA in Music Composition and Performance and has studied gamba with John Dornenburg, Mary Springfels, and Margriet Tindemans, as well as harpsichord and continuo with Elizabeth Wright and Arthur Haas. Her choral and instrumental compositions have been performed both in California and Washington, and most recently by Baroque Northwest and Le Nuove Musiche. Her varied professional music activities have included church music and choral directing, as well as organ, harpsichord, and modern viola performance. She has performed in Carnegie Hall and at the Kennedy Center. Currently, she is Music Director at Olympic View Community Church and runs a private teaching studio for viola and viola da gamba.
