Boot Camp Format

Baroque Flute & Continuo Player Boot Camp FORMAT:
The format will be a group playing session on Sunday evening, two playing sessions on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, one session on Wednesday morning with the afternoon off, a warm-up class on Saturday morning and the class recital on Saturday afternoon. Wednesday evening is completely free. Tuesday evening there are the "Flute & Continuo Circle Jams," Thursday evening is the Faculty Recital, and Friday evening is Ensemble Masterclass. Music Theory as it applies to playing baroque music and continuo will be offered (intro, intermediate, and advanced levels and concepts), viol ensembles, and the opportunity for viols to accompany viol solos will also be on the menu.

Schedule:
0900-0945: Warm up; Note of the day; tuning; group playing
0945-1000: Break
1000-1200: Masterclass* / Private mini-Lessons**
1200-1330: Lunch!
1330-1410: Theory / Alexander Technique
1420-1500: Theory / Alexander Technique
1400-1445: Director's Choice--Hard Core Performance Practice Issues (for those who don't take theory or AT)

  • Improvise preludes; play by ear; c-clef chaos; transposing; interval tuning
1515-1715: Masterclass* / Private Mini-Lessons**

Janet will conduct small group sessions of Alexander Technique as it applies to playing your respective instruments.

Ronnee and David will offer continuo-only sessions on recognizing bass line formulas, what to look for when accompanying, string band, and strings-only masterclasses.

The boot camp culminates in a class recital Saturday after a morning warm-up. The recital starts at 11:00 AM and is open to the public. Before a friendly and supportive audience you will perform music you have worked on during the week. The recital starts at 11:00 AM so those of you who need to travel to another time zone will have ample time to get home on Saturday.

* Masterclass in 25 minute increments, each participant will work with all the faculty during the week. Expect completely different issues and interpretations from each teacher. Don't cling to one because it feels more comfortable. Take them both and make your own interpretation.

**Private mini-lessons will go on concurrently with the masterclass. The schedule is such that everyone will be able to hear all but one of the participants in masterclass.
