Saturday & Sunday, October 18 & 19, 2003
We present 17th-century Italy and 18th-century France
in a gut-strung, no-ornament-barred showdown.
This music demonstrates two different styles
that are as improvisatory as jazz. The Italian approach
is to free the player from the printed page to create
melodies, harmonies, and ornaments that are merely
implied in print. The French style, while very regulated,
can be compared to that of someone like Charlie Parker;
in both styles the musicians play or emphasize notes
that aren't written. This program also features the
premier of a newly commissioned work for the ensemble
by Seattle composer Roupen Shakarian.
Come to the free pre-concert event to learn how early
music performers bring these details to life, and meet
Roupen Shakarian.
