Concertos, Cantatas, & Cacophony: The Early Days of Rock 'n Roll

For the 1998-99 season . . .
Apollon et Doris by Louis-Nicolas Clerambault
Luci barbare spietate by Giovanni Bononcini
Sonata in d for Recorder, 2 violins & continuo by Francesco Mancini, just to name a few!

Special Guests:
JAY WHITE, alto (of Chanticleer) & Seattle's LINDA STRANDBERG, soprano

This concert displays the many colors, textures, and improvisatory attitude of the Benevolent Order for Music of the Baroque ensemble. Taking the vague outlines and unfigured bass parts of the Italian instrumental music, the ensemble pushes the envelope of continuo realizations, taking them beyond the conservative interpretation typical of many baroque performances, while remaining stylistic, as well as redefining the solo parts, making the whole group resemble a jazz ensemble. The recitatives & arias of the cantatas are performed in a no-holds-barred approach to the rhetoric of the text and music, making all the gestures clear and moving, even if you don't speak French, Italian, or German.

In 1994, this program featured . . . Concertos by Antonio Vivaldi and others, and cantatas by Joseph Bodin de Boismortier and J. S. Bach.
