Boot Camp Theory Sessions

Music theory? At a workshop? Really???

Really. It will be fun and stimulating and, like that asparagus you had to eat as a child, good for you!

We guarantee non-threatening but high-octane teaching. We will work with what you know, and help fill in what's missing. Our goal is to get you to think harmonically and put a practical understanding of music theory to work in your playing. For those of you who have already studied music theory, the sessions will be divided by level of experience. If you already know something, we'll teach you something new.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Review of basic harmonic structures (keys, chords, counterpoint)
  • Analysis, on all different levels (both "in depth" and "quick-and-dirty")
  • Review of historical styles: French, Italian, German, English; 17th-century, or 18th-century. Learning what makes them different, and making the most of those features in our playing.
  • For flute players: Thinking from the ground up; learning more about what's going on below, so you can be a more effective player above!
  • For gambists: Providing a firm and shapely foundation for the show going on upstairs! Learning how to phrase and articulate based on what's happening harmonically.
