From the 1999-2000 Season
Benevolent Order for Music of the Baroque pushes the limits of two musical eras in the season opener. Intricate dances by Anthony Holborne and J. H. Kapsberger played by five of Seattle's best recorder players showcase Renaissance dance music at its florid height. Sonatas by J.J. Quantz and Giuseppe Tartini for flute and continuo display the daring eccentricity of the late baroque. Add to this the bizarre harpsichord solos by Carlo Gesualdo and Antoine Forqueray, and the progressive sonata for unaccompained viola da gamba by Johann Schenck, and you've got quite an event--the rise, decline and fall of two musical empires in one concert!
